When you mention South Charlotte to any of the many Charlotte area residents they are sure to bring up two areas; SouthPark and Ballantyne.

History
The SouthPark area was originally part of a 3,000 acre farm owned by former North Carolina Governor Cameron Morrison. The area is now referred to as SouthPark for the chic SouthPark Mall. The mall opened in February of 1970 and is now one of the largest malls in Charlotte, as well as all of North Carolina.

Ballantyne is a lifestyle community located in South Charlotte near the South Carolina border. Land developer, Howard C. Bissell predicted that Charlotte would expand toward the South Carolina border and with this prediction he planned an office and commercial development that he named after his aunt, Barbara Ballantyne.

Today
SouthPark Mall now offers its shoppers many high-end stores such as Kate Spade, Burberry, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and more. The Village at SouthPark, nearby the SouthPark Mall, also offers shoppers additional elegant stores and restaurants. As well as shopping and restaurants, SouthPark is also a residential area and is also home to a variety of fortune 500 companies. Nucor, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Piedmont Natural Gas and First Citizens Bank all have operations located in SouthPark.

Today, Ballantyne offers its residents access to designer shopping, restaurants, corporate offices, residential homes, hotels and more. Ballantyne is also home to the upscale Ballantyne Country Club offering its members access to the golf course, clubhouse, tennis program, fitness center, swimming pool and more.

Another sought after community in South Charlotte is Myers Park. Myers Park offers 2,200 acres, including the Myers Park County Club. Tom Hanchett, a historian at the Museum of the New South has referred to Myers Park as Charlotte's finest planned suburb. Myers Park offers its residents a vast array of lifestyles ranging from bungalows priced in the $300s up to mansion style homes for over $1 million.

With homes ranging from starter homes to million dollar estates, if you are looking in the South Charlotte area you are sure to find a home that fits your lifestyle.

Parks and Recreation
Lower McAlpine, McMullen and Four Mile Creek Greenways make up a horseshoe shaped trail that extends 5.8 miles through south Charlotte. The trail offers a variety of surfaces; including asphalt, gravel and boardwalk. Much of the boardwalk passes through scenic wetlands with a rich variety of wildlife. Ballantyne is host to a number of “pocket parks” throughout the area that offer gorgeous ponds bordered with walkways, picnic areas with grills, resting areas and more.

Schools
Residents in these areas attend schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district. The district is among one of the nation’s 25 largest school districts. The district consists of 176 schools and more than 133,600 students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade. This breaks down to 103 elementary schools, 33 middle schools, 31 high schools, 4 alternative schools and 5 pre-k sites. In 2009, Newsweek recognized 11 of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg High Schools among America’s top 1,500 schools that do the best job of preparing average students for college, out of more than 27,000 high schools that were surveyed.
