YOU MAY BE SURPRISED…..
Many people searching for a home to purchase do so with the mis-conception that their spouse wants the same type of house and amenities as they are looking for.
I have found that a good way to discover if the buyers are on the same page is to put them through an exercise that usually results in surprised looks on their faces.
I ask them to sit down at a table. I then give each of them a piece of paper with a large “T” on it. The seating arrangement has them far enough away from each other so they cannot see what the other is writing on their paper. They are then instructed to write on the left side of the “T” the things they absolute have to have in a house and cannot do without….On the right side of the “T” they list the things they would like to have, but can live without.
When they both finish the exercise, we then have them compare notes. They are usually very shocked to discover the differences in their answers.
They are now instructed to sit close to each other and come up with a list that is compatible, or at least one that allows for “give and take”.
This exercise may take about 30 minutes to complete, but it will save hours, if not days of frustration and disappointment with their home search.
Purchasing a home can be one of the most emotional experiences a person will ever experience, and this exercise is just one more way that I do my part to make the buying and selling process a little less stressful for my clients.
