It really is an eye-opening experience when generational differences are compared. When selling a house in today’s society, one must place great consideration on requirements and expectations of each generation.
Generation “Y” born between 1981-2001 definitely do not have the same living requirements or desires of the Baby Boomers which consist of a range of those born between 1946-1960.
The Baby Boomers require houses that are spacious with many types of rooms. Their ideal bathroom is one that has a separate shower and relaxing garden tub. Boomers prefer a formal living and dining room. They want large functional kitchens, two to three car garages and a large fenced backyard. Baby Boomers usually have two – three cars.
On the other hand, Generation Y does not want spacious rooms, instead they would prefer 400-800 square feet of living area. They do not want a formal living or dining room. They would much rather have a large walk-in shower than a garden tub. They want at least one room large enough to play their Wii or PlayStation 3 Move Games, as well as room for them to have friends over to entertain. The yard should be just big enough to accommodate a small patio and grill area, for their lives do not have time for yard work. If possible, they would rather walk to work and places, but unfortunately the price of homes close to work areas are too expensive for most of the Generation Y's to afford, due to the lack of jobs and pay scales in today’s economy.
Charlotte, North Carolina is a city that has recognized the need to fulfill the dreams and desires of all generational age groups. Like many metropolitan areas, Charlotte, NC has continued to meet the demands of our consumers. Charlotte has worked hard to create the move back into the city to accommodate Generation Y, as well as a continued outward growth in the direction of the suburbs to accommodate the Baby Boomers.
Popular north Charlotte areas such as Huntersville, Cornelius and Lake Norman are within a few short miles of Charlotte and have also grown to accommodate both categories by creating the atmosphere of small towns within small towns for those who would rather walk to restaurants and entertainment.
