Spring Forward - This Weekend!

Like so many things, I am prone to believe urban legends. I knew that Ben Franklin was the author of Daylight Savings, but my belief was that farmers wanted more daylight to do farming but actually they were against the idea. In 1770, Ben Franklin’s motivation was to save money on candles and use the nature light of the morning vs. burning candles late into the night. The natural course of “awake” hours fell during the darker hours of the day but the whimsical idea never really caught on. William Willett, in 1905, was the first “green” thinker to push for the idea. He was conscious of making the most of natural light. Although he lobbied hard, Willett died before daylight savings became a popular idea. It wasn’t until April 2, 1917, the first day of the new parliamentary session, President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany. Congress complied and on April 6, 1917 the United States was at war. Within two weeks, on April 17, a bill called "An Act to save daylight and to provide standard time, for the United States" was enacted. All this is to say that whether you agree with DST or not, this Sunday morning at 2am clocks all over the country (except Hawaii ;) will be springing forward by 1 hour. Enjoy your extra hour of sunshine! SAVE A CANDLE!
BTW: It is a great time to keep your home safe by changing your batteries on your smoke detectors.
